With temperatures dropping during the first few months of the new year, the last thing you need is a broken boiler.

Not only does it put you out, forcing you to wrap up and shiver in front of the TV, but it can also be a costly thing to repair or replace.

To avoid getting caught out in the cold snap, here’s some tips on how to look after your boiler when the temperature drops.

 1. Add an inhibitor liquid

Deposits from hard water and rust from radiators can build up into a sludge inside your central heating system. Once this circulates to the boiler, important pumps and filters may become blocked and cause expensive issues.

Not paying attention to this could cause serious damage to your central heating system and certainly cause heating inefficiency in the meantime. Inhibitor liquids can be added by a professional during a routine boiler service and break down the aforementioned sludge.

 2. Ensure the boiler condensate pipe is insulated

One of the easiest problems to avoid is a frozen boiler condensate pipe. During the winter, these pipes can be the component that is most exposed to the frozen temperatures and cause lasting damage to your heating.

Luckily, there are measures you can take to avoid this issue. Ensuring your condensate pipe is fully cladded with a waterproof coating, you can help prevent it from freezing during the winter.

 3. Check your pressure

Another sure-fire way to look after your boiler is to monitor its pressure all year round. If you notice pressure drops regularly, this could be a sign of airlocks or a leak.

Bleed your radiators to make sure the central heating is free of air, and if problems persist you may need a professional to make sure water isn’t slowly leaking out onto your floor or ceiling areas.

 4. Check your thermostat

While a thermostat is usually just a simple dial on the wall, ensuring your thermostat is in good working order is crucial for your boiler system.

Ageing wiring, dust accumulation or abnormal temperatures might cause the thermostat to improperly communicate temperature with the boiler. If this is the case, you will have trouble regulating the temperature across your home, so make sure it gets checked.

 5. Service your boiler

The main thing you can do to look after your boiler long-term is to get it regularly serviced. We’d always recommend servicing your boiler once a year to make sure you don’t encounter any problems during the colder months.

While this may seem to some like an extra expense on top of home insurance and bills, keeping your boiler in tip-top shape all year round could definitely save you money in the long run by only addressing pricey repairs or replacements when things go wrong.

Wrapping up

Regular boiler maintenance and kitting out your central heating system with the right additives and gadgets can really make the difference when enjoying your winter in the cosy warmth of your home. Nobody wants to be left in the cold when they need their boiler the most.
