Ah, the Yellow Pages! As of 2019, this trusty telephone directory ceased to be chucked through your front door once a year, so you will have to use other means when you need to find a local business or trade.

Thankfully, in our technological world, there are more innovative and convenient ways to find businesses these days.

Back in the day (when the Yellow Pages wasn’t being used as a doorstop or paperweight) when you needed a plumber, tradesmen or anyone else, it was a lifesaver! So, what has happened to this British icon?

The (once) essential paper directory!

The Yellow Pages started out as a simple business telephone directory. Before the internet existed, it was a great way for customers to connect with the business services they needed.

Nowadays, with the internet and an increasingly environmentally conscious Millennial generation, the paper form is out, and the digital directory is in!

Before we all went online, everyone had access to a directory in the form of the Yellow Pages from the comfort of their living room, neatly listed in possibly one of the largest printed books to ever exist.

Sounds revolutionary right?

Well, for a time when smartphones, laptops and Google didn’t exist, this was all we had if we wanted to find the details of a local electrician, plumber or other trade. When there was an emergency, it was the best way to get in touch with someone who could help as quickly as possible.

Admittedly, the Yellow Pages couldn’t list the number of detailed services or consumer reviews for every business as they can now list online. It was a lot more difficult to find out information about a business from just a few basic details listed. They were, regardless, an essential home commodity that was used and valued by all.

Business directory websites have existed for years now, and they work just like the Yellow Pages. The companies listed even have a spot on Yell.com, for good measure.

While their plan is to list a million new businesses on their platform this year, there is still a lot of competition out there compared to when the Yellow Pages was the main directory for the entire UK.

So, why use anyone else?

Being a general business directory, the Yellow Pages (or Yell.com, as it’s more commonly referred to) advertises any business type, all over the UK. On their site, from boarding kennels to furniture shops, you can locate all of the essential information to contact pretty much any business.

So, why use another directory?

Well, choosing a directory that specialises in similar or specific trades mean that the businesses they advertise will be cherry-picked based on reputation, value for money and, of course, customer satisfaction.

The Look4 Group has over 70 directory websites, all specifically catered to a particular line of business. Look4Plumbers does exactly what it says on the tin. We want to help match customers with a local, reliable plumber that can undertake your plumbing needs, such as bathrooms, boilers and central heating.

Wrapping up

Times have changed in the directory world. No longer do we need to reach for the heavy Yellow Pages to find local businesses - and we have the internet to thank for that.

It doesn’t mean that the demand has gone, and directories like the Yellow Pages have shown us that by making a fairly simple transfection online, people will always need help finding the right person for the job.
